They're right.

We keep trying to fix it with more

Here's the assumption almost every one of us is running on, whether we'd say it out loud or not:

People aren't moving because they don't have enough yet.

Not enough information. Not enough conviction. Not enough clarity. So we preach harder. We tighten the system. We add the hype, the highlight reel, the one more thing.

And every ad in your feed swears it'll work. Just send this text. Just build this funnel. Just install this system, and they'll stay.

You've tried it. We all have.

It doesn't hold.

Because more information was never the lever. You cannot inform someone into belonging. You cannot argue someone into staying. You cannot hype someone into becoming.

We've been treating a connection problem like an information problem.

And you can't fix the wrong problem no matter how good you get at it.

Here's what we actually believe

A person's next step toward Jesus does not depend on how convinced they are.

It doesn't depend on how informed they are, how impressed they are, or how good the sermon was.

It depends on how known they feel.

People move at the speed of connection.

That's the whole thing. That's the line we'll die on.

And we don't mean it small. We don't just mean the nervous guest in the back row deciding whether to come back. We mean all of it — every step, the entire climb.

Connection precedes discipleship.

But it also precedes transformation. And courage. And spiritual growth. And retention. And ownership. And leadership.

The guest doesn't take a first step until they feel connected — and neither does the fifteen-year veteran on your core team. The new believer doesn't grow without it, and the burned-out volunteer doesn't break through without it. It's tangible and it's spiritual and it's relational, all at once, because people are tangible and spiritual and relational all at once.

Nobody gets discipled at a distance.

Nobody gets transformed by a stranger.

Connection isn't the nice part of the work. It's the mechanism. It's the thing every other good thing runs through. Take it out and the sermon doesn't land, the system doesn't convert, the volunteer doesn't last, the disciple doesn't form.

Connection First. Always.

Connection isn't a feeling. It's three needs.

Now, the second you say "connection," somebody hears "be nicer." Softer lights, warmer vibes, more hugs in the lobby.

That's not it.

Connection is structural. It's three specific needs getting met, and they're the same three for every human who walks through your doors, whether it's their first Sunday or their fifteenth year on staff:

Safe.I won't be judged here. I won't be rushed. It's okay to be exactly where I am.

Known.Someone here sees me — my name, my story, my situation — not just a warm body in a seat.

Encouraged.Someone sees who I'm becoming, and calls me up to it before I'm sure I'm ready.

All three are always running. But they build in order, and they carry a person through the whole journey:

Safe enough to stay.
Known enough to grow.
Encouraged enough to go.

A church built around those three needs — for everyone, at every altitude — is what we mean by a connection culture. Not a warmer version of what you already do. A different thing entirely.

And here's where most of us have gone wrong — we've optimized it backwards. We pour everything into the front door. We love-bomb the first visit, nail the first impression, and then quietly assume the job is done the moment someone sits down or signs up.

But the kingdom was never supposed to plateau. Lewis got it right at the end of Narnia — further up and further in. It never stops getting better. It's not arrive-and-coast. It's climb-and-keep-climbing.

We built a beautiful welcome mat and forgot the mountain behind it. People come in feeling safe, and then spend years in the building without ever being in the body — attending indefinitely, connected to no one, until life gets hard or busy and they slip out the side door. And we never notice they're gone, because if we'd been in the habit of noticing, we'd have known them in the first place.

Connection First. Always.

The whole thing runs on one posture: go first

If you want to know whether a church actually believes any of this, watch who moves first.

Because here's the truth we have to start with: nobody walks in already feeling safe. Safety is not the human default — guardedness is. People come in with their walls up, scanning to see if this place is real, if they belong, if it's okay to come out of the shadows.

So we don't wait for them to lower the walls. We go first.

We prove it in advance. Before it's earned. Before it's tested. Before they've given us any reason.

We make the first move toward safety, so they don't have to risk it blind. We get curious about them before we've told them a single thing about us. And that exposes the question underneath everything we do:

Are we actually interested in them?
Or are we just desperate for them to be interested in us?

People can feel the difference instantly. A church that needs you to join its stuff feels like a sales floor. A church that's genuinely curious about you feels like home. One is going first out of love. The other is going first out of need. Same motion. Opposite spirit.

And this is the same move all the way up the mountain — it doesn't stop at the guest. Encouragement, the highest need, is just going first at altitude. The literal meaning of the word is to put courage into someone — courage they don't yet have for themselves. You go first with belief in who they're becoming, before they can see it, so they can borrow yours until it's theirs.

Going first is the whole ballgame. At the trailhead and at the summit.

Connection First. Always.

It's a climb, not a coast

We'll be honest with you about what this costs.

There is no silver bullet. There is no single system that fixes a culture. There's no text you can send that makes people stay, no funnel that manufactures belonging, no hack that shortcuts the slow work of being genuinely known by other people.

It's a climb. It's not a coast.

It's hard for the guest, and it's hard for the leaders building it, and anyone selling you easy is selling you something that won't hold.

And here's the catch that ought to change how you lead this week: it takes connection to build connection. You cannot create a connected culture from a disconnected posture. You can't hand people something you're not living. The work is the thing and the way, both.

So this is our line in the sand. What we've been describing has a name: a connection culture. Not a program. Not a department. Not the friendly part of the funnel.

It's a way of being — from the parking lot to the elder board, from the first-time guest to the longtime leader, from feeling safe enough to stay all the way to being sent back out to build it for someone else.

One mountain. One fuel. Everybody climbing.

Connection precedes everything.

So we lead with it. First. Always.
